This Australian native tree from the southern third of the continent is very hardy and tolerant of semi-desert to moist temperate environments. It is intolerant of waterlogging. It grows from about 3 to 6m high and wide and is a densly canopied fine leaved evergreen. Quandong bears 2-4 cm spherical fruits that ripen to bright red, beautiful when in ripe crop. Large seed covered by dry flesh that is famous stewed to make a rare and tasty preserve. Quandong is parasitic on many plants from which it gains water and nutrients. Myoporum makes a good host for cultivated trees and we grow this plant in the pot with the quandong.
