Persimmon - Plant now it is cooler
The Persimmon is one of our favourite fruits, beautiful to look at and luscious to eat. The tree is lovely, compact and spreading. It provide good summer shade and glorious autumn colour.
It is very productive, the fruit hanging on in brilliant display into winter.

There are three main types of persimmon variety.
Astringent persimmon varieties are the old fashioned type. The fruit are impossible to eat in a firm state because the mouth is drawn in by a massive and unpleasant astringency.
But, if kept on the shelf to ripen, they become luscious flavoured, jammy sweet and soft.
Our variety Nightingale is one of these. I nice strong tree of good size up to 4-5m tall and wide. Rich autumn coloured leaves, a good shade tree in the summer.
Non-astringent varieties are famous because we can eat the firm ripe fruit straight from the tree. They are delicious with mildly flavoured sweetness. Smooth textured and crunchy at the beginning of the ripening season, they get softer and juicier until going all jammy at last.
Fuyu is the best known variety. It is tomato shaped and bright red-orange when ripe. The tree is about 4m tall and wide and makes a good shade tree.
Ichikikei Jiro is a fruit very similar to Fuyu but one that grows on a smaller tree, maybe to 3m tall and wide. It begins to bare early in its life and is consistent year to year.
Persimmon trees can be planted in all the cool or mild months of the year, say April till October. Avoid the hot months. Although they tolerate a wide range of soil types once established, they do not like wet feet as a young tree. Be careful to follow Perrys watering plan in the 1st summer.
